1993 to date: Freelance Cameraman / Editor

Since the demise of TVS I have been working as a freelance cameraman on both single and multicamera shoots on location and in studio for a large clientele in both the broadcast and corporate spheres. I do a lot of hand-held/radiocamera operation. In addition to camerawork I also edit, originally in a 4 machine Abekas Solo suite, now on Final Cut Pro.

1982-1992: Senior Cameraman (Camera Supervisor) for TVS

In 1983 I commenced operating on ENG for the magazine programme as well as my existing work in studio and on outside broadcasts. PSC operation now encompassed most of the current affairs and sports programmes as well as inserts into studio based dramas and LE shows. I was expected to light on location as part of my duties.

In 1992 TVS lost its franchise. Meridian Broadcasting took over the franchise as a publisher/broadcaster. I was one of three staff television cameramen retained by TVS at Southampton until they ceased transmission on 31st December.

1977-1981: Substantive Cameraman for Southern Television

In August 1977 I left the BBC and joined Southern Television. My work expanded to include outside broadcasts, ranging from soccer to Glyndebourne Opera. Southern was one of the pioneers of the use of handheld television cameras in ITV. I rapidly became a specialist in their use. In 1981 Southern lost its franchise to TVS.

1969-1977: Cameraman for BBC TV

I joined the BBC on 28th April 1969 as a trainee technical operator. After a three month basic technical course at the Engineering Training Centre at Evesham, I went to Television Centre in London where I had practical training in camera and sound operation. Over the next seven years I worked on a wide variety of studio based productions at Television Centre, the Television Theatre and Lime Grove Studios; Music, Drama, Situation Comedy, Light Entertainment, Current Affairs and Children's Programmes. In addition to studio based productions, I worked on a number of outside broadcasts as a specialist crane swinger.
