With the increase in traffic following the Great War, the KUR needed a heavy haulage locomotive. After trials with 2 superheated locomotives, 62 class GD locos, later reclassified as EB3, were ordered from Vulcan Foundry in 1923. Numbered 162 - 223 they became EAR 24 class 2401 - 2462. 2401 was withdrawn in 1980 and was eventually rescued for the museum from Tororo where it had lain derelict for some years.
