This revised list of the yellow fever victims is based on the 1871 yellow fever burial register "laboriously compiled" by the Revd Francis Neville Lett (archive 30.25.06 at St John's Anglican Cathedral, Buenos Aires). Its data has been compared with its parallel register (archive 30.25.03). These registers were transcribed by Jeremy Howat.

Transcripts of the St Andrew`s Scotch Church, Buenos Aires, register kindly supplied by Cathy Murray (FHL microfilm 1840832; Item 4.20).

Records of deaths by other causes in 1871 amongst the English protestant community can be found on the British Settlers in Argentina website. This has a search facility to enable you to track down individuals, or you can go direct to the 1871 page.

The 1870 Outbreak

This outbreak appears to have been restricted to one city block and resulted in about 100 deaths.

Two English women are listed as having died in this outbreak, Mrs Downes, wife of William Downes, and Mrs Anita Russell, wife of John George Russell and daughter of Dr Hugh Thomas Sheridan (Source: Saudades). Mrs Russell is, however listed as dying of Typhoid Fever in February 1871 in the Victoria Cemetary records. A third victim of this outbreak was Dr Robert Reid, director of the British Hospital, who died on 2nd April 1870.

The Cemetaries

The Cemetario del Sur was otherwise known as the "Rincón de las Cruces" Cemetery, located on the modern map of Buenos Aires as the block surrounded by Avenida Vélez Sarsfield, Calles Suárez, Lafayette and Avenida Amancio Alcorta, the present day site of the Instituto Microbiología Dr Carlos Malbrán.

The Cementerio del Sud, opened in April 1867, only five blocks away, is now the Parque Florentino Ameghino.

The provisional cemetery opened for the victims of the cholera outbreak of 1867 was located close by in a triangle of land bounded by Calle Perdriel 300s and Avenida Amacio Alcorta 1700s.

The site of the Lazaretto or isolation hospital, where a number of people died of the yellow fever, has been identified by Jorge Alfonsín as the present day Hospital Francisco Javier Muñiz, located across the road from the Yellow Fever burial ground.
